Rafferty’s Rule 26: When in doubt, raise hell and see who complains about the noise. Rafferty’s taking a vacation in a small Texas town when he gets arrested for a murder he didn’t commit. But someone butchered Cynthia Lawson, and Rafferty was one of the last people to see her alive, so he’s involved, whether he likes it or not. Faster than you can say, “Five hundred on Texas A&M in the Bowl Game,” Rafferty is up to his ass in shady bookies, crooked doctors, protective ex-lovers and religious fundamentalists. And although he doesn’t normally pull protection detail, when the scorned wife of the accused killer asks for his help, Rafferty decides to stay a while longer in the boondocks. He’s not convinced the cops have the right guy behind bars and, if they don’t, that means the real killer is still out there. Besides, the sooner Rafferty gets this whole mess cleared up, the sooner he can get back to his vacation. If you’re a fan of Spenser, Mike Hammer or Matt Scudder, then this hardboiled pulp thriller, from Shamus Award Winner W. Glenn Duncan, will keep you reading late into the dark night. “I have all of the Rafferty titles in my collection. I've gotten rid of a lot of stuff over the years, but the Rafferty books are a mainstay. I think they’re terrific!”—Paul Bishop LAST SEEN ALIVE is a hardboiled P.I. mystery in the tradition of the best pulp thrillers. Rafferty’s a Dallas P.I. and an ex-cop who spent enough time on the streets to understand how things work. And when they don’t, Rafferty’s the guy you’ll want on your side. He may quote Latin occasionally, smoke too much and be a cynical sonofabitch, but when it all hits the fan and you need someone you can trust, you’ll be glad you called Rafferty. Originally published by Ballantine, this 30th Anniversary release of LAST SEEN ALIVE marks the first time that W. Glenn Duncan’s work has been available in digital format. We doubt that Rafferty would quietly accept the ongoing march of technology that provides this opportunity, but even a grizzled P.I. has to grow up sometime. This hardboiled PI series will continue with the first new Rafferty story in nearly three decades. FALSE GODS, written by W. Glenn Duncan Jr. (son of the original author) sees Rafferty looking for a missing girl, up to his ass in religious fundamentalists and needing all the help he can get from his old pals Cowboy and Mimi—and a few new ones—to make sure he gets out alive. This is the reason why I wrote this script about Elvis. I grew up with his music and loved it. But what I so admired about him, was the way he never gave up. He was so determined he would become famous, and look after his parents. When I became older I wanted to know why he seemed so unhappy, never content. He seemed to be always looking for something, which I can relate to. How I seem to know this is because the way he acted and the body language. So when they reckon he died, things did not seem to add up. So many things started to come to light. Even I could tell by just looking at the body in the coffin was not Elvis. Why were people coming out with so many different stories about the night he died? For example, no one could get the colour of his PJs correct. You would also know if someone had not came to bed all night, I know I would know if I was alone for more then a few hours, and why not accept the American flag. He strongly believes in his country. That is why I had to look more into it. So many fans have been hurt, why he would do this. When he cared so much about the people. Did Colonel Parker have something to do with this? After all, he is worth more dead than alive. He was wealthy, so he could just disappear. And even if he was sick, he could afford the best Medical help he needed. Why did they not do a DNA if he is really dead, because Lisa would know that is the one thing that can prove he is really dead? Would you not do a DNA test just so everyone would get of your back, and so you can have a quite life? I know I would owe it to his fans, just so he could rest in peace. Hoping this book would spark of more questions. Looking for answers’.

Contents Introduction Chipita Rodriguez Colin Campbell Ross Timothy Evans Steven Truscott Guildford Four and the Maguire Seven The Birmingham Six Sean Hodgson Lindy Chamberlain Ellis Wayne Felker Carlos DeLuna Kirk Bloodsworth Michael Morton Sion Jenkins We all have a fear of being accused of something we didn’t do and being punished accordingly. When this happens the injustice can be infuriating, but usually the situation can be resolved quickly and peacefully. Sometimes, however, this occurs on such an unfathomably huge scale that it results in our freedom being taken away from us. It may be paranoid to live in fear of this happening, but history has seen it occur countless times. None of us are impervious to being in the wrong place at the wrong time or, in extreme circumstances, being framed. Throughout this book we visit shameful episodes in criminal history around the world, episodes that have seen the wrong person put behind bars for a crime he or she did not commit. In some of these cases an eventual exoneration sees that person freed and released back into society, but sometimes the so-called guilty party has paid the ultimate price for their alleged sins. Often in these cases the prisoner has protested their innocence, and has unsuccessfully appealed their conviction, but sadly, the day comes when they can protest no more. All over the world, the criminal justice system works its hardest to ensure those that break the law receive the correct, and just, punishment. However, some cases are complicated, some are prejudiced, and some are flawed from the beginning. When the innocent are jailed, and the guilty walk free, it is one of the most horrendous travesties of justice.

Foul Deeds and Suspicious Deaths Around Portsmouth takes the reader on a sinister journey through centuries of local crime and conspiracy, meeting villains of all sorts along the way - cut-throats and poisoners, arsonists and assassins, mutineers, duellists and marauders, prostitutes and thieves, and the brawling seamen and common murderers who moved through the cruel underworld of this historic town. Sarah Quail has selected over 20 notorious episodes that give a fascinating insight into criminal acts and the criminal mind. She recalls intriguing and shocking cases dating from medieval times to the present day. In the process she uncovers an extraordinary variety of misdeeds, some motivated by brutal impulse or despair, others by malice, which taint the history of every age. Most of the cases she recounts involve ill-fated individuals who are only known to us because they were caught up in crime, but she also reconsiders more famous episodes like the murder of the Duke of Buckingham and the disappearance of the Cold War frogman Buster Crabb. The human dramas that are played out in these pages often take place in the most commonplace of circumstances, but others are so odd as to be stranger than fiction.
