Nine out of ten Japanese claim some affiliation with Shinto, but in the West the religion remains the least studied of the major Asian spiritual traditions. It is so interlaced with Japanese cultural values and practices that scholarly studies usually focus on only one of its dimensions: Shinto as a "nature religion," an "imperial state religion," a "primal religion," or a "folk amalgam of practices and beliefs." Thomas Kasulis' fresh approach to Shinto explains with clarity and economy how these different aspects interrelate. As a philosopher of religion, he first analyzes the experiential aspect of Shinto spirituality underlying its various ideas and practices. Second, as a historian of Japanese thought, he sketches several major developments in Shinto doctrines and institutions from prehistory to the present, showing how its interactions with Buddhism, Confucianism, and nationalism influenced its expression in different times and contexts. In Shinto's idiosyncratic history, Kasulis finds the explicit interplay between two forms of spirituality: the "existential" and the "essentialist." Although the dynamic between the two is particularly striking and accessible in the study of Shinto, he concludes that a similar dynamic may be found in the history of other religions as well. Two decades ago, Kasulis' Zen Action/Zen Person brought an innovative understanding to the ideas and practices of Zen Buddhism, an understanding influential in the ensuing decades of philosophical Zen studies. Shinto: The Way Home promises to do the same for future Shinto studies.

A New York Times Notable Book: “An extraordinarily moving portrait of the complexities and confusions of familial love” (Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times). From the author of the bestselling King Leopold's Ghost, this haunting and deeply honest memoir tells of Adam Hochschild's conflicted relationship with his father, the head of a multinational mining corporation. The author lyrically evokes his privileged childhood on an Adirondack estate, a colorful uncle who was a pioneer aviator and fighter ace, and his first explorations of the larger world he encountered as he came of age in the tumultuous 1960s. But above all this is a story of a father and his only son and of the unexpected peace finally made between them.

Growing up in Bavaria during World War II, Ernestine Bradley came to know wartime dislocations and food shortages, along with the challenges of taking care of her siblings while her mother was ill. The men of her hometown were away at war, but their absence created an exciting unexpected freedom–a freedom she sought again at 21 when she became a stewardess, moved to New York and went on to marry a shy basketball star who played for the New York Knicks. Yet the paradoxes of her childhood shaped Bradley’s life. Her hard-won discipline helped her maintain a full-time career as a professor while she commuted weekly to Washington and her husband’s public life; and Germany’s literary response to the holocaust of which she had been unaware became her scholarly passion. Cancer confronted her with a personal war, ultimately demanding a vulnerability she had never allowed herself. Frank, warm, and deeply moving, The Way Home is an inspiring American story. From the Trade Paperback edition.

--Are stay-at-home wives old-fashioned and outmoded (at best) or parasites (at worst)?--Is daycare the natural habitat for babies and toddlers?--Is family planning the only responsible choice for married Christian couples?--Are Christian children doomed to rebel against their parents, and ultimately abandon church?--Does the Bible include examples of "working wives"?--Can a lovely Christian home actually affect the culture and the economy -- just by being there?25 years ago, The Way Home was the first book to ask all these questions -- and answer them. A bestseller when it first came out, for decades The Way Home has been a source of inspiration and encouragement for married Christian women. It shows how the life plan set out in Titus 2:3-5 brings love and creativity to home, church, and society, and the deadly consequences to all three when women reject it. We have a special mission, and this book explains it step by step. This 25th Anniversary Edition preserves the original book's text, so you can see for yourself how accurate its social predictions were. You will also find a new Preface and Afterthoughts dealing with such topics as Home Business (what kind NOT to start), TV and the Internet (the latest research and some suggestions), Fruitfulness (why "trusting God for your family size" is not a "baby derby"), Modesty (it's important, but it's not about skirt lengths), and where the Patriarchy movement has veered off-course (starting with its name!).Just as thought-provoking as the original edition, the 25th Anniversary Edition of The Way Home brings the Bible's message on family and social roles to an entire new generation of Christian women.

You're crazy ... She'll take over and shove us out. I can just see this place in winter: no carpets, acres of wet newspaper underfoot, family huddled under blankets while the pig hogs the fire.' Richard and Bookey Peek hadn't planned on a warthog, any more than one would plan a tidal wave, a tornado or triplets, but on Stone Hills game sanctuary, natural disasters have a way of happening when you least expect them. Through Zimbabwe's darkest hours, Stone Hills has become a world in itself, a place where you might share your shower with an owl or your bed with a baby squirrel. Take a fresh look at the hospitality game with a couple whose crocodiles are named after unpopular guests. And follow the barefoot young David and his playmate, the warthog Poombi, as she relinquishes her place on the sofa to return to the wild - much to her indignation. Engaging and delightfully readable, this is a testament to one family's passion for Africa's wildlife and their conviction that nothing can change the essential nature of the land and its people. All the Way Home is the exhilarating and intensely moving story of a fiercely protected piece of Africa in the heart of the majestic Matobo Hills.

When Henry Dunow signs up to coach his son Max’s Little League team on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, he finds himself looking back on his own childhood and his father, Moishe, a Yiddish writer and refugee from Hitler’s Europe, who had considered recreation like playing catch with his son narishkeit, “foolishness.” Determined to be a different kind of parent to his first grader, Dunow bumbles through a self-test of fatherhood on the scruffy fields of New York’s Riverside Park, playing coach, cheerleader, father, and friend to a ragtag bunch of seven-year-olds, many of whom are discovering baseball for the first time. The Way Home is the affecting and ironic story of Dunow’s journey of discovery as he watches his relationship with Max evolve over the course of a Little League season, and comes to understand what being a father to his son can teach him about the man who was his own father.
