Tie on your apron and step into Jim Henle's kitchen as he demonstrates how two equally savory pursuits—cooking and mathematics—have more in common than you realize. A tasty dish for gourmets of popular math, The Proof and the Pudding offers a witty and flavorful blend of mathematical treats and gastronomic delights that reveal how life in the mathematical world is tantalizingly similar to life in the kitchen. Take a tricky Sudoku puzzle and a cake that fell. Henle shows you that the best way to deal with cooking disasters is also the best way to solve math problems. Or take an L-shaped billiard table and a sudden desire for Italian potstickers. He explains how preferring geometry over algebra (or algebra over geometry) is just like preferring a California roll to chicken tikka masala. Do you want to know why playfulness is rampant in math and cooking? Or how to turn stinky cheese into an awesome ice cream treat? It’s all here: original math and original recipes plus the mathematical equivalents of vegetarianism, Asian fusion, and celebrity chefs. Pleasurable and lighthearted, The Proof and the Pudding is a feast for the intellect as well as the palate.

This text explores the many transformations that the mathematical proof has undergone from its inception to its versatile, present-day use, considering the advent of high-speed computing machines. Though there are many truths to be discovered in this book, by the end it is clear that there is no formalized approach or standard method of discovery to date. Most of the proofs are discussed in detail with figures and equations accompanying them, allowing both the professional mathematician and those less familiar with mathematics to derive the same joy from reading this book.

The book title: "The Proof is in the Pudding" means that to fully test something you need to experience it yourself. My goal was to prove that we do have a Soul and there is a Spiritual Reality, why I wanted to prove this was because I have had many spiritual events in my life; When I was three years old I had a near death experience, so I knew I had a Soul, because I was outside my body and able to travel until I returned to my body. However I never told the public until 2010, in an article I wrote for a magazine. Later in life I found a need within myself to find the answers to my experiences. So after many years of studying these events of my own and others, including social research of Ancient Philosophers, I found they believed there is a Spiritual Reality and it was the cause for the Physical Reality and our world. They also believed that there was a higher power that created all there is in both realities. Metaphysics was their world view. So the hope I wish to bring from this book is this, if we utilize our Soul we will gain the insight to all our problems and be able to solve them. Here are two quotes from Ancient Philosophers, that have changed my world view on being our true selves! "Plotinus' believed that man should reject material things and should purify his Soul and lift it up to a communion with the 'ONE' Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy - good summary of Plotinus'and his teachings. "Those who obtain divinity become Gods... but by nature there is only one God, but many by participation." Boethius 480 AD to 524 AD - Philosophy 100 Essential Thinkers - Philip Stokes, page 82. I believe it is possible to be less materialistic and align our Soul with a higher power to live like a God serving mankind, like others have demonstrated, it just might be the best parent, member of your community etc; or try living your best by practising the St. Francis Prayer in your daily affairs. This will allow you to live in wholeness, the benefits are great. I think my pocket book of hope may help people be more open minded and seek truth.

Jamie Oliver says of Pride and Pudding 'A truly wonderful thing of beauty, a very tasty masterpiece!' BLESSED BE HE THAT INVENTED PUDDING The great British pudding, versatile and wonderful in all its guises, has been a source of nourishment and delight since the days of the Roman occupation, and probably even before then. By faithfully recreating recipes from historical cookery texts and updating them for today’s kitchens and ingredients, Regula Ysewijn has revived over 80 beautiful puddings for the modern home cook. There are ancient savoury dishes such as the Scottish haggis or humble beef pudding, traditional sweet and savoury pies, pastries, jellies, ices, flummeries, junkets, jam roly-poly and, of course, the iconic Christmas pudding. Regula tells the story of each one, sharing the original recipe alongside her own version, while paying homage to the cooks, writers and moments in history that helped shape them.

This book presents an integrated approach to measuring the level of intra-party democracy through deductive and standardized content analysis of party statutes. Following the two main criteria of intra-party democracy – inclusiveness and decentralization – three main categories of intra-party democracy are theoretically derived: members’ rights, organizational structure and decision-making. On the basis of theoretical considerations further sub-categories and individual items are deduced from these main categories and put together into a comprehensive coding scheme. Furthermore, precise coding instructions are presented. Since it is the ultimate aim of this book to present an approach to measuring the level of intra-party democracy for any party statute and to express this in numerical terms, the final step is the quantification of the coded data and the calculation of a numeric measure of intra-party democracy. A numeric value of intra-party democracy can be calculated for any statute of any political party. Furthermore, empirical examples from Hungary, Slovakia and Romania are presented.

What is math? How exactly does it work? And what do three siblings trying to share a cake have to do with it? InHow to Bake Pi, math professor Eugenia Cheng provides an accessible introduction to the logic and beauty of mathematics, powered, unexpectedly, by insights from the kitchen. We learn how the béchamel in a lasagna can be a lot like the number five, and why making a good custard proves that math is easy but life is hard. At the heart of it all is Cheng’s work on category theory, a cutting-edge "mathematics of mathematics,” that is about figuring out how math works. Combined with her infectious enthusiasm for cooking and true zest for life, Cheng’s perspective on math is a funny journey through a vast territory no popular book on math has explored before. So, what is math? Let’s look for the answer in the kitchen.

Phil Vickery - one of the most highly regarded young chefs in Britain - is particularly celebrated for his fabulous puddings. Puddings are his personal passion. As he says in his introduction, "I have cooked, eaten and prepared thousands of puddings and desserts in my twenty-three of cooking professionally, and I can truthfully say that no other section of the modern kitchen inspires me so much. Desserts are comforting, satisfying, and deeply enjoyable. I just want to take the fear out of puddings and to show why it is that puddings are so wonderful to cook, and eat." Though he is a chef Phil Vickery's style of cooking is much closer to good, simple home cooking than to restaurant food. PROOF OF THE PUDDING is a collection of 200 unfussy recipes, all of which are easily achievable at home. Phil Vickery covers the whole range of sweet cooking and draws on various culinary traditions, including British and Continental. His book is at once comprehensive and authoritative. It touches on the history of desserts and puddings, their ingredients, processes and techniques. Every sort of pudding is represented here, including flans and tarts, sponge puddings, milk and cream puddings, meringues, mousses and cheesecakes, souffles, fruit purees and compotes, and sweet breads. The design of PROOF OF THE PUDDING is luxurious and contemporary, and the colours - sugar-almond pink, eggy yellows, creamy whites and chocolatey browns - evoke the visual pleasures of puddings.

‘Tom Bennett is the voice of the modern teacher.’ - Stephen Drew, Senior Vice-Principal, Passmores Academy, UK, featured on Channel 4’s Educating Essex Do the findings from educational science ever really improve the day-to-day practice of classroom teachers? Education is awash with theories about how pupils best learn and teachers best teach, most often propped up with the inevitable research that ‘proves’ the case in point. But what can teachers do to find the proof within the pudding, and how can this actually help them on wet Wednesday afternoon?. Drawing from a wide range of recent and popular education theories and strategies, Tom Bennett highlights how much of what we think we know in schools hasn’t been ‘proven’ in any meaningful sense at all. He inspires teachers to decide for themselves what good and bad education really is, empowering them as professionals and raising their confidence in the classroom and the staffroom alike. Readers are encouraged to question and reflect on issues such as: the most common ideas in modern education and where these ideas were born the crisis in research right now how research is commissioned and used by the people who make policy in the UK and beyond the provenance of education research: who instigates it, who writes it, and how to spot when a claim is based on evidence and when it isn’t the different way that data can be analysed what happens to the research conclusions once they escape the laboratory. Controversial, erudite and yet unremittingly entertaining, Tom includes practical suggestions for the classroom throughout. This book will be an ally to every teacher who’s been handed an instruction on a platter and been told, ‘the research proves it.’
