With unwavering determination, she and her college sweetheart, William, set out to do just that. As their dreams become reality, this seemingly perfect life is shattered by murder. As you were growing up, your mother's self-image likely impacted your own in many conscious and unconscious ways. Perhaps those things your mother disliked about herself-her looks, her lack of confidence, or even her personal failures-came to shape your own self-image. In My Mother, My Mirror, an experienced psychotherapist explores how mothers unwittingly pass on their self-esteem and body image issues to their daughters, helps you break the cycle when parenting your own daughters, and guides you through the process of overcoming the hidden negative messages that keep you from reaching your fullest potential. Without blaming your mother, you will learn to rethink and rebuild your self-image. A thoughtful and engaging perspective on mother-daughter relationships in all of their complexity. -Melinda Parisi, Ph.D., psychologist at the University Medical Center at Princeton

Dietrich Bonhoeffer's example of self-sacrificing discipleship has for over fifty years inspired Christians around the world in both their resistance to evil and their devotion to Jesus Christ. Yet for some readers--particularly those who suffer trauma, abuse, and other forms of violence--Bonhoeffer's insistence on self-sacrifice, on becoming a "person for others," may prove more harmful than liberating. For those already socialized into self-abnegation, uncritical applications of Bonhoeffer's teachings may reinforce submission, rather than resistance, to evil. This study explores Bonhoeffer's understandings of selfhood and spiritual formation, both in his own experience and writings and in light of the role of gender in psycho-spiritual development. The central constructive chapter creates a mediated conversation between Bonhoeffer and these feminist psychologists on the spiritual formation of survivors of trauma and abuse, including not only dimensions of his thinking to be critiqued from this perspective but also important resources he contributes toward a truly liberating Christian spirituality for those on the underside of selfhood. The book concludes with suggestions regarding the broader relevance of this study and implications for ministry. The insights for spiritual formation developed here provide powerful proof of Bonhoeffer's continuing and concretely contextualized relevance for readers across the full spectrum of human selfhood.

Many women-regardless of income, size, shape, ethnicity, and age-are uncomfortable in their own skin. We fixate on our body image and try endless diets, implants, hair extensions, and new shoes, but it's never enough. The problem is that girls and women have been socialized to mistakenly conflate body esteem and self-esteem. Body esteem refers to how you think and feel about your physical appearance: your size, shape, hair, and features. Self-esteem refers to how you think and feel about your personality, your role in relationships, your accomplishments, and your values-everything that contributes to who you are as a person. The Woman in the Mirror goes beyond typical self-esteem books to dig deep into the origins of women's problems with body image. Psychologist Cynthia Bulik guides readers in the challenging task of disentangling self-esteem from body esteem, and taking charge of the insidious negative self-talk that started as early as when you first realized you didn't really look like a fairy princess. By reprogramming how we feel about ourselves and our bodies, we can practice healthy eating and sensible exercise, and focus on the many things we have to offer our family, community, and job. Bulik provides us the tools to reclaim our self-confidence and to respect and love who we are. Praise for Crave: "More than 7 million Americans struggle with binge eating disorder (BED) . . . Crave: Why You Binge Eat and How to Stop helps shed light on the problem."-O, the Oprah Magazine

Mom in the Mirror: Body Image, Beauty, and Life after Pregnancy is for every woman who has ever doubted herself or her self-worth after the birth of a child. Because most women spend much of their lives attempting to change their bodies, it’s not surprising that the weight gain that comes along with pregnancy (and post-pregnancy), coupled with the challenges of parenting, only exacerbate issues with weight, body image, disordered eating, and self-esteem. Drawing on the wisdom of eating disorders expert Dr. Dena Cabrera, as well as the personal experiences of former anorexic Emily Wierenga, Mom in the Mirror is a physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual response to a female generation seeking its true identity in an appearance-based world. With chapters that deal with bruises from the past, misconceptions about pregnancy, life before and after children, marriage and motherhood, spiritual and physical nourishment, relationships with friends and family, and the changing role of a mother as her children age, it is a holistic approach to the age-old questions: Who am I, and why am I here? Comprising personal stories, expert advice, reflection questions, and helpful tools, this book is an inspiring read intended for women everywhere who want to restore a positive body image and to overcome the insecurities that arise when pregnancy is over and child-rearing begins.

In The Mother Mirror, Laurie Corbin studies the mother-daughter relationships portrayed in autobiographical works by Colette, Simone de Beauvoir, and Marguerite Duras. Psychoanalytic theory, in particular the work of Luce Irigaray and Julia Kristeva, is used to show how women's self-representations can be determined by the ways in which they see their mothers. Corbin's feminist theoretical framework illuminates both the psychological and the social contexts of these autobiographical works, showing that even the most intimate relationships are shaped by social structures and that social reality is dependent on the workings of the psyche.

The stock market crash October 19,1987 becomes a pivotal life-changing event for identical twins Tom and Glenn Lonardo. The fallout from this calamitous market collapse triggers actions and events that inexorably engulf the brothers, sucking them into a vortex called disaster. It is a tale of “cool” assassins, a unique Las Vegas casino with its enforcers, Wall Street players and pundits and beautiful women. It is replete with a host of unforgettably bizarre characters including a Jewish midget who is part Eskimo and a FBI agent who yodels, and a background true to life story of brothers brought up in contrasting cultures. It is a story of larceny, love and lust; greed and deceit; a fugitive on the run and murder! While it is suspenseful and has its unspeakably tragic twists and turns, it is highly entertaining and always amusing. It will keep a reader’s eyes open! A work of FICTION, it borrowed from much that was true.
