Woodworking is thriving in the hands-on, DIY, maker world we currently live in. Yet, for it's increasing popularity, there are many crafters who don't engage in woodworking because they falsely believe you need a large workshop and a full-blown collection of tools and equipment. The Minimalist Woodworker is about eliminating this myth. To enjoy woodworking, all you need is a few essential tools, a little bit of space, and the desire to make something with your own two hands. The Minimalist Woodworker is about making woodworking clean and simple – from the tools and the workspace to the easy-to-follow instructions. It eliminates the fears and excuses as it demystifies the craft. Written by Vic Tesolin, aka the Minimalist Woodworker, a woodworker, instructor, and writer who is currently a technical adviser at Lee Valley Tools, The Minimalist Woodworker is a stress-free approach for the hobbyist that emphasizes the destination is actually the journey. Beginning with an understanding of the minimalist mindset, The Minimalist Woodworker quickly details how to make a small space productive and outlines the most efficient tools for a woodworker. Each piece of equipment is explained and instructions on how to use are provided. Techniques for keeping them sharp and maintained are also explained. Once space and tools are covered, seven projects are presented: a saw bench and matching saw horse, a Nicholson-style workbench, a shooting board/bench hook, a shop mallet, and a small hanging cabinet. Each project not only develops woodworking skills, but also outfits The Minimalist Woodworker's small shop. With step-by-step instruction, photos and illustrations, and an easy-going voice, The Minimalist Woodworker offers a stress-free point of entry into the life-long craft of woodworking.

After two New York Times bestsellers, Nick Offerman returns with the subject for which he's known best—his incredible real-life woodshop. Nestled among the glitz and glitter of Tinseltown is a testament to American elbow grease and an honest-to-god hard day’s work: Offerman Woodshop. Captained by hirsute woodworker, actor, comedian, and writer Nick Offerman, the shop produces not only fine handcrafted furniture, but also fun stuff—kazoos, baseball bats, ukuleles, mustache combs, even cedar-strip canoes. Now Nick and his ragtag crew of champions want to share their experience of working at the Woodshop, tell you all about their passion for the discipline of woodworking, and teach you how to make a handful of their most popular projects along the way. This book takes readers behind the scenes of the woodshop, both inspiring and teaching them to make their own projects and besotting them with the infectious spirit behind the shop and its complement of dusty wood-elves. In these pages you will find a variety of projects for every skill level, with personal, easy-to-follow instructions by the OWS woodworkers themselves; and, what’s more, this tutelage is augmented by mouth-watering color photos (Nick calls it "wood porn"). You will also find writings by Nick, offering recipes for both comestibles and mirth, humorous essays, odes to his own woodworking heroes, insights into the ethos of woodworking in modern America, and other assorted tomfoolery. Whether you’ve been working in your own shop for years, or if holding this stack of compressed wood pulp is as close as you’ve ever come to milling lumber, or even if you just love Nick Offerman’s brand of bucolic yet worldly wisdom, you’ll find Good Clean Fun full of useful, illuminating, and entertaining information. Minimalist design--maximum style! In the middle of the last century, a new generation of designers sought to render furniture to its most essential forms. In doing so, they created timeless designs that defined Mid-Century Modern Style. From the sleek geometric lines of Bauhaus-inspired design to the sculptural shapes of Danish masters, this furniture captured the imagination of the era and enjoys growing popularity today. Now for the first time, author Michael Crow has carefully detailed 29 seminal works by the era's foremost designers, including Hans Wenger, Finn Juhl and George Nelson. At their best, these spare, often sculptural designs transcend their period and are at home in a variety of settings. Each piece has been selected carefully so it can be built in an average workshop. Inside this book you'll find: More than 100 drawings with exploded views, elevations and details for projects to fit every room in your house. Practical advice on wood selection, hardware sources and contruction and finishing techniques. Two step-by-step project builds. A richly illustrated historical overview tracing the evolution of the style and exploring the designers and makers who shaped it.

"Donald Judd was one of the leading artists of the second half of the twentieth century. His "specific objects" - which he refused to call sculpture - represent a radical and revolutionary use of space, scale, and materials. By contrast, the primary concern in his many drafts and designs for architecture and furniture is utility, although the formal relationship to his artistic objects is plain." "All facets of Judd's work converge in Marfa, West Texas, where he systematically turned an abandoned fort into one of the world's major ensembles of contemporary art. This book uses drawings, plans, and photographs of Marfa to illustrate Judd's radical approach to architecture and design, and to demonstrate the meticulous attention he paid to the settings for his installations. Photographs of Judd's aluminum and wooden furniture series and examples of his plywood tables, chairs, and shelves display his stringent application of aesthetic brevity and precision in form and material." "First published in German in 1991, this revised and expanded edition contains additional illustrations and several essays that have not previously appeared in English. Donald Judd's original contribution, an anti-war essay written during the 1991 Gulf War, is complemented by a second essay on the relationship between art and architecture."--BOOK JACKET.

This book accompanies and celebrates the inaugural exhibition at the new Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, designed by the Japanese architect Tadao Ando. The central subject of and impetus for this building from the beginning has been art, with particular emphasis on the display of the permanent collection. Of the 153,000 square feet of space to support space that emphasizes art like few museums in the world. That the first exhibition in these pristine galleries is devoted to the collection is a testament of pride and priority. Works by approximately 150 artists, covering a wide range of movements, especially postwar Abstract Expressionism, Pop art, and Minimalism, are currently displayed over the Museum's three two-story gallery pavilions. Together they present a broad range of styles and media, from oil, acrylic, and mixed-media paintings and drawings to photography, sculpture, installation art, and video and digital imagery. In honor of the Museum's 110th anniversary, 110 of these artists have been chosen for inclusion in this publication. Each artist's work is presented in the form of a large color plate and a detailed text entry, together with footnotes and key artist information. A selection of the artists - notably Philip Guston, Anselm Kiefer, Gerhard Richter, and Robert Motherwell - are presented in the form of extended monographic essays, accompanied by up to eight works, as a reflection of their importance in the Museum's permanent collection and their wider importance in the development of postwar art.

As a child, John Brooks loved to build models and sail with his grandfather. When most teenagers were at the prom, John was changing jibs in the Indian Ocean, halfway through a 35,000-mile, two-year cruise. He began building boats in commercial yards at 19, while studying boat design and building his own boats. John worked for many years honing his craftsmanship on fine yachts, small boats, custom furniture, and a harpsichord. He has been a instructor at the WoodenBoat School in Maine since the mid-1990s, teaching glued-lapstrake boatbuilding, fine interior joinery, and carving. Ruth Ann Hill grew up on the coast of Maine. A writer, boatbuilding assistant, naturalist, and graphic artist, Ruth is the author of Discovering Old Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park: An Unconventional Guide and a contributing editor for Maine Boats & Harbors magazine. Remodelista.com is the go-to, undisputed authority for home design enthusiasts, remodelers, architects, and designers. Unlike sites that cater to all tastes, Remodelista has a singular and clearly defined aesthetic: classic pieces trump designs that are trendy and transient, and well-edited spaces take precedence over cluttered environments. High and low mix seamlessly here, and getting the look need not be expensive (think Design Within Reach meets Ikea). Remodelista decodes the secrets to achieving this aesthetic, with in-depth tours and lessons from 12 enviable homes; a recipe-like breakdown of the hardest-working kitchens and baths; dozens of do-it-yourself projects; “The Remodelista 100,” a guide to the best everyday household objects; and an in-depth look at the ins and outs of the remodeling process. In a world of design confusion, Remodelista takes the guesswork out of the process.
