Here is the seminal biography of the magician's magician, Howard Thurston, a man who surpassed Houdini in the eyes of showmen and fans and set the standard fro how stage magic is performed today. Everyone knows Houdini-but who was Thurston? In this rich, vivid biography of the "greatest magician in the world," celebrated historian of stage magic Jim Steinmeyer captures the career and controversies of the wonder-worker extraordinaire, Howard Thurston. The public's fickleness over magicians has left Thurston all but forgotten today. Yet Steinmeyer shows how his story is one of the most remarkable in show business. During his life, from 1869 to 1936, Thurston successfully navigated the most dramatic changes in entertainment-from street performances to sideshows to wagon tours through America's still-wild West to stage magic amid the glitter of grand theaters. Thurston became one of America's most renowned vaudeville stars, boldly performing an act with just a handful of playing cards, and then had the foresight to leave vaudeville, expanding his show into an extravaganza with more than forty tons of apparatusand costumes. His touring production was an American institution for nearly thirty years, and Thurston earned a brand name equal to Ziegfeld or Ringling Brothers. Steinmeyer explores the stage and psychological rivalry between Thurston and Houdini during the first decades of the twentieth century- a contest that Thurston won. He won with a bigger show, a more successful reputation, and the title of America's greatest magician. In The Last Greatest Magician in the World, Thurston's magic show is revealed as the one that animates our collective memories.

A diverse new anthology that traces the meaning and magic of the sorcerer's apprentice tale throughout history "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" might conjure up images of Mickey Mouse from the Disney film Fantasia, or of Harry Potter. As this anthology reveals, however, "sorcerer's apprentice" tales—in which a young person rebels against, or complies with, an authority who holds the keys to magical powers—have been told through the centuries, in many languages and cultures, from classical times to today. This unique and beautifully illustrated book brings together more than fifty sorcerer's apprentice stories by a plethora of writers, including Ovid, Sir Walter Scott, and the Brothers Grimm. From Goethe's "The Pupil in Magic" to A. K. Ramanujan's "The Guru and His Disciple," this expansive collection presents variations of a classic passed down through countries and eras. Readers enter worlds where household objects are brought to life and shape-shifting occurs from human to animal and back again. We meet two types of apprentice: "The Humiliated Apprentice," a foolish bumbler who wields magic ineffectively and promotes obedience to authority; and "The Rebellious Apprentice" who, through ambition and transformative skills, promotes empowerment and self-awareness. In an extensive introduction, esteemed fairy-tale scholar Jack Zipes discusses the significance and meaning of the apprentice stories, the contradictions in popular retellings, and the importance of magic as a tool of resistance against figures who abuse their authority. Twenty specially commissioned black-and-white illustrations by noted artist Natalie Frank bring the stories to visual life. The Sorcerer's Apprentice enlightens and entertains readers with enduring, spellbinding tales of sorcery that have been with us through the ages.

The Master of Darkness is the tyrannical ruler of the western coastal city of Kerballa. In an attempt to extend his rule inland, he has kidnapped the Princess of Time and is holding her prisoner in his castle until she agrees to marry him. The young knight, Red John, is in love with the Princess. He sets out on a quest to free her accompanied by his friend Morduc, an Elven Prince. As they are crossing a river, John is swept away by a flash flood. Morduc continues on their quest alone. During that journey he meets his own true love Marianna, learns to speak Froggan, and survives a trip through dark and dangerous caverns beneath the mountains east of Kerballa. Meanwhile, a jungle tribe far downriver has saved John from the flood. He returns the favor by saving the tribe from the Monkey King. As a reward, he is offered the chief’s daughter and royal rule, but declines, remaining faithful to the Princess. With Palla Nad and Yanibo, two new jungle friends, he arrives at the southern port city of Imbal where they all sign on as performers with a travelling circus. The circus docks at Kerballa on the very same day that Morduc enters the city disguised as a seedy old street magician. Both are eventually invited to perform at the castle. During their performances they succeed in rescuing the Princess just as lightning bolts begin to rain down upon the castle. The Master of Darkness is presumed dead and buried beneath the smoking rubble. Red John is elected the governor of the newly free Kerballa. In a festive wedding in the town square Red John marries the Princess, and Morduc marries his beloved Marianna.
