One man’s quest to find the oldest Bible scrolls in the world and uncover the story of the brilliant, doomed antiquarian accused of forging them. In the summer of 1883, Moses Wilhelm Shapira—archaeological treasure hunter and inveterate social climber—showed up unannounced in London claiming to have discovered the oldest copy of the Bible in the world. But before the museum could pony up his £1 million asking price for the scrolls—which discovery called into question the divine authorship of the scriptures—Shapira’s nemesis, the French archaeologist Charles Clermont-Ganneau, denounced the manuscripts, turning the public against him. Distraught over this humiliating public rebuke, Shapira fled to the Netherlands and committed suicide. Then, in 1947 the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered. Noting the similarities between these and Shapira’s scrolls, scholars made efforts to re-examine Shapira’s case, but it was too late: the primary piece of evidence, the parchment scrolls themselves had mysteriously vanished. Tigay, journalist and son of a renowned Biblical scholar, was galvanized by this peculiar story and this indecipherable man, and became determined to find the scrolls. He sets out on a quest that takes him to Australia, England, Holland, Germany where he meets Shapira’s still aggrieved descendants and Jerusalem where Shapira is still referred to in the present tense as a “Naughty boy”. He wades into museum storerooms, musty English attics, and even the Jordanian gorge where the scrolls were said to have been found all in a tireless effort to uncover the truth about the scrolls and about Shapira, himself. At once historical drama and modern-day mystery, The Lost Book of Moses explores the nineteenth-century disappearance of Shapira’s scrolls and Tigay's globetrotting hunt for the ancient manuscript. As it follows Tigay’s trail to the truth, the book brings to light a flamboyant, romantic, devious, and ultimately tragic personality in a story that vibrates with the suspense of a classic detective tale.

This book is divided into three parts. The first part contains The Legends of Moses the Man and Moses the Magician, which brings to life who Moses really was. It includes the legends of him as a magician found both inside and outside of the Bible. Part Two is How the Sacred Writings of Moses were Lost, which explains how additional books of Moses, beyond the first five books of the Bible, can be accounted for and what is in them. Part Three is called The Book of Miscellaney, which reveals the magical applications of Moses' additional books. This section includes the 44 Secret Keys to Universal Power, various magical seals, and explains the modern influence of the Kabbalah, which traces it to a Mosaic origin. This final section also includes a chart of all the revelations made by Moses to various people in the Bible. This is an excellent book combining hard-to-find historical information on Moses with the magical power that can be associated with him.

Among the canonized Latter-day Saint doctrinal sources, there is no book with more profound insights into the truths of eternity than the Pearl of Great Price. Truly it is a jewel among the scriptures. and among guides to understanding the ancient portions of that marvelous book, no light shines brighter than the enlightenment found in this valuable commentary. This book deals primarily with the Pearl of Great Price books of Moses and Abraham. Recognizing that the writings of Joseph Smith are usually treated as the basis for studies in LDS Church history, the author has chosen to omit coveraage of thos portions in his book in order to consider the ancient writings in greater depth. After giving a useful overview of the Pearl of Great Price, he reviews how these ancient books were received and published by the Church. He then moves back in time to study and draw meanings from the pre-mortal Council in Heaven, the creation of the earth, man's condition before the fall of Adam, and the significance of that fall. He explains the experiences of Adam and Eve and analyzes the first great apostasy which occured when their children rejected the gospel. a chapter considers the deeper roots of the black civilization. Another treats the prophet Enoch's panoramic vision of the world. the writings of Abraham are also treated in depth in a similar manner. Recent research has opened up new understandings, and these matters are treated in the later chapters of the book. for instance, along with the writings of Abraham, Joseph Smith received another scroll containing the writings of Joseph of Egypt. the author discusses what is known concerning those writings. He also deals with the recent discovery of the Egyptian Book of Breathings, telling how it was found, and presents interesting new insights on the Egyptian endowment. a final chapter shows relationships between the LDS temple ceremony and the Egyptian papyri. the writing shows the abilities of a competent teacher. Each chapter, for instance, ends with a detailed summary. a very detailed index makes the book especially easy to use. Horizon Publishers takes pleasure introducing this very useful and thought-provoking commentary, and highlly recommends it to those who are seeking new insights and the latest findings on the ancient scriptures.

They have... books with these terrible, awe-inspiring Names... they know that the use of these mysterious Names, without due and careful preparation, brings with it calamity and premature death. -from the introduction How much ancient wisdom was lost in the medieval years! here laments Moses Gaster, one of the most prominent Jewish theologians and folklorists of the late 19th century. In 1896, he translated a fragmentary relic of Gnostic literature, a manuscript concerned with the many secret names of God believed by Kabbalists to wield enormous magical power, but in the discussion that here precedes the translation, Gaster acknowledges that this document only hints at the texts that may be lost forever. It remains a tantalizing peek into archaic occult mysteries. Jewish scholar MOSES GASTER (1856-1939) was born in Romania but emigrated to England, where he lectured at Oxford University. His wrote numerous books of theology, folklore, history, and literature, including History of Rumanian Popular Literature (1883) and five-volume Sephardic prayer book (1901-6).
