Damian and Ezhno live across the country from each other and both work dead end night jobs. Every morning, they stare at the same rising sun and contemplate martyrdom for causes they haven't found yet. They want to be pure. They want to feel at home. They want the past to quit kneeing them in the groin. They aren't so sure about a future.

There is no greater authority on the saints than Alban Butler, and his enormous research has been the standard reference on the subject for the last two and a half centuries. This new adaptation of Butler's multi-volume Lives of the Saints presents a modernized text for today's reader and provides an illuminating guide to these historic, symbolic, and foundational Christian men and women. Butler's daily readings from the lives and works of the saints offer readers of all backgrounds the opportunity to engage directly with these great figures. Butler's distinctive contribution to stories about saints was to turn attention away from the superhuman, miraculous themes that are prevalent in earlier works. He gives us saints who are examples of Christian living, who provide inspiration for our own lives, in every time and circumstance. As Butler writes: "They were once what we are now, travelers on earth. They had the same weaknesses we have. We have difficulties; so had the saints." Important features of this version include mention of recently canonized saints as well as those whose path to official sainthood is still in progress. Also included in the daily readings are more obscure saints whose lives and contributions to Christianity should not be forgotten.

The Secret Lives of Saints paints a troubling portrait of an extreme religious sect. These zealous believers impose severe and often violent restrictions on women, deprive children of education and opt instead to school them in the tenets of their faith, defy the law and move freely and secretly over international borders. They punish dissent with violence and even death. No, this sect is not the Taliban, but North America's fundamentalist Mormons. Daphne Bramham explores the history and ideas of this surprisingly resilient and insular society, asking the questions that surround its continued existence and telling the stories of the men and women whose lives are so entwined with it—both the leaders and the victims.

Has a repressive morality been the primary contribution of Christianity to the history of sexuality? The ascetic concerns that pervade ancient Christian texts would seem to support such a common assumption. Focusing on hagiographical literature, Virginia Burrus pursues a fresh path of interpretation, arguing that the early accounts of the lives of saints are not antierotic but rather convey a sublimely transgressive "countereroticism" that resists the marital, procreative ethic of sexuality found in other strands of Christian tradition. Without reducing the erotics of ancient hagiography to a single formula, The Sex Lives of Saints frames the broad historical, theological, and theoretical issues at stake in such a revisionist interpretation of ascetic eroticism, with particular reference to the work of Michel Foucault and Georges Bataille, David Halperin and Geoffrey Harpham, Leo Bersani and Jean Baudrillard. Burrus subsequently proceeds through close, performative readings of the earliest Lives of Saints, mostly dating to the late fourth and early fifth centuries—Jerome's Lives of Paul, Malchus, Hilarion, and Paula; Gregory of Nyssa's Life of Macrina; Augustine's portrait of Monica; Sulpicius Severus's Life of Martin; and the slightly later Lives of so-called harlot saints. Queer, s/m, and postcolonial theories are among the contemporary discourses that prove intriguingly resonant with an ancient art of "saintly" loving that remains, in Burrus's reading, promisingly mobile, diverse, and open-ended.

From St Fillan of Munster, patron saint of the mentally ill, who read by the light of his miraculously glowing arm, to Santa Lucia, who tore out her eyes to dismiss the lascivious attentions of her would-be husband, here are nearly 200 classic stories of the saints of Christian legend. Richard Coles, former half of 80s pop duo The Communards, now a Church of England priest and presenter of Radio 4’s Saturday Live, has collected these wonderful tales from around the world. Despite their bizarre, colourful and sometimes grotesque stories, many of these saints are still celebrated and prayed to today. This collection is arranged thematically, with an index of saints’ days at the back of the book for anyone who wants to discover or pray to a saint a day. Every page illustrated by cartoonist Ted Harrison, giving the book a saintly Horrible Histories feel.

Diaries of My Past Lives - Is a collection of short stories inspired by the events from the author’s life. They are easily recognized as hospital stories, war related stories, stories from the North and others. Growing up under specific circumstances she has been watching the world under a microscope of her own. So as much as the stories are related to factual events they are, in fact, fiction. One of her significant inspirations is based on letters. Her family and friends have been scattered all over the world and for that reason it became a tradition in her family life to write letters. Using a narrative form, this author speaks about the texture of life and in life, relating to myth and poetics and colors of art as well. Her hospital stories have a specific implication of how woman’s life is affected by brutal treatment and still unsuccessful medicine to find a cure for cancer. English language is author’s second language and that makes her writing complex, long and slow process. Her continual sentence polishing and search for adequate wording that corresponds to her native language is an ongoing process. Her major critic is her common-law husband. He is also her editor. His criticism has been an important help by insisting on precision and by that helping her to distance herself from the work and review the work anew. Each story implies a metaphor left for the readers to discover and reflect upon. Experience conveyed in the work hopefully will stir readers’ emotions and reflection about their own mosaic of events.
