Things have never been easy for Oscar. A ghetto nerd living with his Dominican family in New Jersey, he's sweet but disastrously overweight. He dreams of becoming the next J.R.R. Tolkien and he keeps falling hopelessly in love. Poor Oscar may never get what he wants, thanks to the Fukú - the curse that has haunted his family for generations. With dazzling energy and insight Díaz immerses us in the tumultuous lives of Oscar; his runaway sister Lola; their beautiful mother Belicia; and in the family's uproarious journey from the Dominican Republic to the US and back. Rendered with uncommon warmth and humour, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao is a literary triumph, that confirms Junot Díaz as one of the most exciting writers of our time.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2016 im Fachbereich Englisch - Literatur, Werke, Note: 1,0, Universität Konstanz, Veranstaltung: Hauptseminar: American Literature and Culture 2, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: This term paper analyzes the language used in "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" by Junot Díaz and intends to find out how the language mirrors the transcultural identity of the characters. In order to do so, first the terms "Identity" and "Transcultural Identity" are defined and explained, followed by a subchapter discussing the relationship between the language a person uses and his or her identity. Following that, a detailed analysis of the language in the novel is made. This includes the two languages English and Spanish as well as the methods of mixing them and switching between them. Furthermore, there is a variety of speech registers to be found in the novel, two of which are discussed in detail, namely "Nerdspeak" and Academic English. The analysis includes the description of when and how specific words or registers are used, as well as the interpretation as to what this reveals about the sense of belonging or the confusion of identity found in the characters.

So beeinflusse, laut Torres-Saillant, die westliche Sichtweise, welche nur einen „centrifugal glance“ (1997: 61) erlaubt, die Darstellung der Sachverhalte und zeige dabei „little regard for the Caribbean except for the profit or conflict that outsiders may derive from it“ (Torres-Saillant 1997: 61). Dabei, so Torres-Saillant, kollaborieren die Wissenschaftler „in perpetuating a notion that assigns meaning to the Archipelago in terms of its past, present or future connections with Western societies“ (1997: 61). Des Weiteren deklariert sie „[that] [s]uch a discourse of “Caribbeanness” fails because it does not take into account the moveable and transnational realities of the Caribbean region, nor does it help to raise awareness of these issues beyond the hierarchies imposed by the colonial past” (2008: 92).

Junot Díaz’s renowned novel, The Brief, Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (Oscar Wao), presents the brief and wondrous life of its main character, Oscar Wao, but also describes the exceptional lives of Lola and Belicia, his sister and mother, respectively. While the story’s title asserts an enthusiastic tone to the lives of Oscar—and the females in his family—the story actually reveals the victimization and demise of these characters. Though Díaz offers the spell of Fukú americanus, a Dominican superstition, Feminist Theorist Judith Butler provides a more advantageous, concrete explanation for the subjugation of these characters. Butler argues that culture dictates certain expectations for gender performances, but also punishes the individuals who do not live up to these expectations. However, this project will use Anzaldúa’s The Borderlands to complement Butler in order to translate her theory to a work of Latino American literature, and explain how these characters may be seen as hybrids. This thesis explores how Díaz’s novel realizes Butler’s postulate as the main characters do not live up to these expectations, and thus are penalized. The chapters in this thesis will be attributed each to one character, and in this order: Oscar, Lola, and Belicia. Each chapter will encompass a thorough examination into each character’s upbringing, personality, interpersonal and intrapersonal operations, in order to account for their deviation from cultural gender expectations. After each character composition is detailed, the chapters will discuss how each of these factors leads to the character’s downfall, confirming Butler’s Gender Performativity Theory. Finally, this project concludes in showing how all three characters, of differing genders and time periods, as well personal identities, are unable to depart from the gender roles established by Dominican culture without any repercussions.

This reading of Junot Díaz's The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao argues that narrator Yunior's failure to capture the authentic speech of Beli illuminates the failure of narrative generally to speak authentically for the subaltern. The writings of Mikhail Bakhtin, Gayatri Spivak, and Scott McCloud work together to uncover the political and ethical implications of Yunior's willful erasure of Beli's voice. In the sections detailing her early life, Yunior draws attention to the gaps in the information he gives readers and thus reminds them that all narrative excludes and distorts details to fulfill an objective. This reading argues that those gaps of information that Yunior calls "blank pages" function similarly to the gutters in comic books. The gutters Yunior creates force the readers to fill in the blank pages with their own interpretation of events, and, in the end, both Yunior and the readers are complicit in erasing Beli's voice from her story. --Page ii.

Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, University of Würzburg (Neuphilologisches Institut), course: Caribbean Literature and Culture, language: English, abstract: Occurring in many different forms in the novel, violence is an important factor in The brief and wondrous life of Oscar Wao. It seems that violence in his various forms has its origin in the Spanish colonization, which expands to shape the whole society. This colonial past - which is above all a violent past - of the Dominican Republic and the structures it has left on the current Dominican society influences the life of the characters of the novel enormously. Although the colonial period of the Dominican Republic is over, its effects are still noticeable in various forms and its structures and effects still persist.
