Following her diagnosis of metastatic lung cancer, Loni Kaplan wrote a CaringBridge blog to keep family and friends across the country up-to-date. Kaplan's book is a compilation of these online journal entries. Through her journal, she shares her story from the moment of diagnosis with metastatic lung cancer, through treatment, and return to "a new normal." During her illness, Kaplan was gifted with perceptive insights about life, which she shares with unwavering honesty and a consistently positive attitude. She shares not only her cancer journey, but also tales of homeschooling her four profoundly gifted children, and going through a separation, all while battling cancer. Kaplan is unfailingly optimistic, filled with gratitude, and appreciative of every day. Encouraged by friends and family to share her journal with a wider audience, Kaplan wrote Something Extraordinary to reach as many people as possible, with her inspirational observations and suggestions for living a life of integrity, kindness and joy. Reminiscent of Randy Pausch's The Last Lecture, Kaplan's Something Extraordinary is enlightening and inspiring to all. ** Half of the profits from all sales will be donated to cancer support, homeschool support, gifted support, Habitat for Humanity and Heifer International. **

Creating a spectacular garden is challenging when you thought you'd be living somewhere else by now. How do passionate gardeners struggling with limited resources manage to put aside feelings of inadequacy and envy and begin to create an oasis in the midst of numerous obstacles? Why should they even try? In her debut book, Big Dreams, Small Garden, columnist and blogger Marianne Willburn presents a comprehensive step-by-step plan for creating an ideal garden in less-than-ideal circumstances—encouraging the discouraged to pick up their trowels, put on their gloves, and get on with it. With humor and irreverence, she painlessly guides readers to make a deeper connection with the places they call home, letting go of limiting emotions and embracing a new perspective, and in doing so, makes a case for one of the longest relationships in human history—that of man’s relationship with the soil. Big Dreams, Small Garden is an informative, often lighthearted look at coming to terms with your space, embracing your space, and miraculously falling in love. It cannot fail to appeal to a generation that is once again returning to the land only to find that it is further and further out of reach.

Approaching disability as a cultural construction rather than a medical pathology, this book studies the impact of disability and concepts of disability on composers, performers, and listeners with disabilities, as well as on discourse about music and works of music themselves. For composers with disabilities--like Beethoven, Delius, and Schumann--awareness of the disability sharply inflects critical reception. For performers with disabilities--such as Itzhak Perlman and Evelyn Glennie--the performance of disability and the performance of music are deeply intertwined. For listeners with disabilities, extraordinary bodies and minds may give rise to new ways of making sense of music. In the stories that people tell about music, and in the stories that music itself tells, disability has long played a central but unrecognized role. Some of these stories are narratives of overcoming-the triumph of the human spirit over adversity-but others are more nuanced tales of accommodation and acceptance of life with a non-normative body or mind. In all of these ways, music both reflects and constructs disability.

Welles. Hitchcock. Kubrick. These names appear on nearly every list of the all-time greatest filmmakers. But what makes these directors so great? Despite their very different themes and sensibilities, is there a common genius that unites them and elevates their work into the realm of the sublime? The Extraordinary Image takes readers on a fascinating journey through the lives and films of these three directors, identifying the qualities that made them cinematic visionaries. Reflecting on a lifetime of teaching and writing on these filmmakers, acclaimed film scholar Robert P. Kolker offers a deeply personal set of insights on three artists who have changed the way he understands movies. Spotlighting the many astonishing images and stories in films by Welles, Hitchcock, Kubrick, he also considers how they induce a state of amazement that transports and transforms the viewer. Kolker’s accessible prose invites readers to share in his own continued fascination and delight at these directors’ visual inventiveness, even as he lends his expertise to help us appreciate the key distinctions between the unique cinematic universes they each created. More than just a celebration of three cinematic geniuses, The Extraordinary Image is an exploration of how movies work, what they mean, and why they bring us so much pleasure.

All major religions of the world are expecting him. Christians know him as the Christ. Jews are still awaiting the Messiah. Hindus anticipate the coming of Krishna. Muslims are expecting the Imam Mahdi. And Buddhists call him the Fifth (Maitreya) Buddha. The names are all different, but many believe they all refer to the same person: a world Teacher who is among us now, and is called Maitreya. But he does not come as a religious leader. He is here as a guide for people of all religions, all countries, all societies. In this age of crisis, he is here to inspire all of us to put down the sword of religious, social, and economic strife, and to seek justice based on sharing and global cooperation of the human family. His message is that of all great teachers of the ageless wisdom: peace, love, the golden rule. Some very prominent world leaders and celebrities, and many others, are aware of Maitreya's reappearance, but are not yet prepared to go public due to the possible effect on their professional reputations/ however, many believe that it's just a matter of time before everyone will recognize that the world teacher is back, living among us. Wayne Peterson, a former American diplomat and director of the Fulbright Scholarship program, tells the story of his own extraordinary encounters with Maitreya, and why Maitreya has returned. It is a story of strange, fascinating events and penetrating wisdom and an inspirational message of hope for the future. It is a story that deals with nothing less than humanity's opportunity to redefine its institutions and beliefs based on the ancient wisdom common to all traditions. Above all, it is a story, both personal and planetary, of love, and of those extraordinary spiritual beings who embody it to the world.

Jon Ronson's Adventures With Extraordinary People collects together in a single volume three of Jon Ronson's bestselling titles, Them, The Men Who Stare at Goats and The Psychopath Test. Them charts Jon's discovery that extremists - Islamic fundamentalists, neo-Nazis, Ku Klux Klansmen - all have one oddly similar belief: that a tiny, shadowy elite rule the world from a secret room. And so Jon sets out to locate that room. Chased by men in dark glasses and unmasked as a Jew in the middle of a Jihad training camp, Jon's journey is creepy as well as comic, and perhaps the extremists are on to something . . . The Men Who Stare at Goats tells the unbelievable story of the First Earth Battalion, established by the US Army in 1979 as a secret unit, they defied all known military practice, and even the laws of physics, in their belief that a soldier could become invisible, pass through walls and kill goats just by staring at them. And, as Jon discovers, they really weren't joking. The Psychopath Test sees Jon set out on an utterly compelling adventure into the world of madness. He meets psychopaths, those whose lives have been touched by madness and those whose job it is to diagnose it, from whom Jon learns the art of psychopath-spotting. And it soon becomes clear that madness could indeed be at the heart of everything . . . Often funny, sometimes chilling and always thought-provoking, these books combine Jon's trademark humour, charm and investigative incision whilst asking some very serious questions. Fowler, Samuel P., Editor. Salem Witchcraft; Comprising More Wonders of the Invisible World. Collected by Robert Calef; And Wonders of the Invisible World, By Cotton Mather; Together With Notes and Explanations. Salem: H.P. Ives and A.A. Smith, 1861. xxi, [22]-446, [3], [447]-450 pp. Reprint available February 2005 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. ISBN 1-58477-462-2. Cloth. $110. * This volume collects two important early accounts of the infamous Salem witchcraft trials based on primary sources. Published in 1693, Wonders of the Invisible World by Cotton Mather [1663-1728] is an account of selected trials written at the request of the judges, who wished to address claims of impropriety. Though he believed in witchcraft, Mather was critical of the judges' conduct when the trials were underway. After reading the transcripts, however, he concluded that the verdicts rested on ample evidence according to the standards of English and American law. Published in 1700, More Wonders of the Invisible World, Or The Wonders of the Invisible World Displayed by Robert Calef [1648-1719] attacked Mather's account. Skeptical about the existence of witchcraft, he argued for the injustice of the trials and suggested, moreover, that Mather influenced the judges and public opinion. A well-documented and devastating account, it was the first important publication to show that the trials were a miscarriage of justice.
