Tommy was standing there without a drink along that last bit of bar. End of the line, Lee thought, where else would she find him? She stopped in front of him, almost as tall as him in her pumps, knowing full well that everybody in the joint was watching her and not giving one thin damn. She could only stand there a moment though, and then she had to touch him; she put her arms around his neck and her cheek next to his, just to feel him after all this time, to smell him after all these years. And then he put those hams of his around her and they stayed like that, not saying anything, for maybe a minute. Finally she put her lips against his neck and then on his mouth and she stepped back to look at him again. "Oh, you goddamn mick," she said. "Where you been?" At 35, Tommy Cochrane is a washed-up boxer who missed out on a shot at the heavyweight title and has to hang up his gloves for good when he's diagnosed with an aneurysm. His best friend and former sparring partner, T-Bone Pike, isn't in great shape either as the two of them head to Toronto on a quest for the $5,000 Tommy desperately needs to buy back his grandfather's farm. In the big city, Tommy and T-Bone encounter an intriguing cast of characters operating on the questionable side of the tracks. Fat Ollie runs the weekly poker game on Queen Street; Buzz Murdoch gives Tommy a job as a doorman at the Bamboo club; Herm Bell is a sharp kid on a run of luck; and Tony Broad is a small-time hood with big-time ambitions and a seedy sidekick named Billy Callahan. There's also Lee Charles, a sharp, cynical, smart-mouthed torch singer, who happens to be Tommy's ex-girlfriend. In the tradition of James Ellroy, Brad Smith has readers instantly embroiled in a quick-paced plot that involves guns and money, good guys and bad guys, double and triple crosses, and an exciting, suspenseful payoff. An unerring tradition of '50s Ontario, rich in local colour and with the kind of crackling dialogue that drives an Elmore Leonard novel, One-Eyed Jacks is a great read that opens up the underbelly of Toronto the Good.

Stages of Literature The sorcerer dawned with skills of voodoo. The tarot card depicts the sorcerer from the voodoo stage, and he permeated into an image, with its symbols of the English court. The tragicomedy period (old English) dispelled the notion of the “sorcerer” being placed between us and our maker. Of course even without the sorcery, forces continued to defy logic. Properties of voodoo, through perspectives, were at the helm. Laws of force were soon accepted by the maturing world. Although these forces have constructs that are not visible, the effects were known to be very consistent. Testing such laws proved reliable to cause and effect. The age of reason brought wisdom, through retrospect, of how we react to the unknown and unexplained. We simply make up what we do not know. However, we do so by taking the perspectives we are granted and reasoning out the realities that lie within. With reality being created from our crooked and unaligned perspectives, our realities pale in comparison to God’s truths. The Romantic Period paired our realizations of reason and logic up against the phenomenon we call emotions. Emotions won hands down. Earlier chronicles of man demonstrate mystery, but the mystics are to the nth power within emotions. The day of the zodiac combines logics and emotions and is depicted by the symbols of civilization. Each past civilization will leave signs of what they most feared and what they most needed (adored). The interrelation of humans is controlled by the celestial constellations, aligning our compatibility to one another. It barely scratches the surface of why we are magnetized to some while we are polarized from others. Charms of Makings caused her end. Makings of charm will set and begin.

Part critique, part witty polemic, this revisiting of one of the 1960s' most tortured and misunderstood productions finds a flawed masterpiece that survived multiple writers (including Stanley Kubrick), an egomaniacal star with no previous directing experience, and a virulent critical reaction to become, in retrospect, a crucial rethinking of the Western genre. Included is an excerpt from a screenplay cowritten by Barry Gifford and James Hamilton that retools Brando's characters into the hapless inhabitants of a noir Old West.

Introduction in poker: online poker, rules, hands, strategy, cheating, casino, tournaments, poker jargon, equipment, gambling, resources. Poker is a microcosm of all we admire and disdain about capitalism and democracy. It can be rough-hewn or polished, warm or cold, charitable and caring or hard and impersonal. It is fickle and elusive, but ultimately it is fair, and right, and just. -- Lou Krieger

Set in an England that is finally hosting the World Cup, Newskids on the Net is the re-release of Nick Handel’s popular children’s thriller, which has sold over 3,000 copies. It’s a perfect read for 9 – 13 years olds in this World Cup year and will have even reluctant readers on the edges of their seats. Ever wondered what it would be like to have your own TV station? With the help of cameraman Ollie ‘Sniffer’ Morris (who can smell a great news story from miles away), designer Becky Morris (aka the ‘IT’ girl), presenter Rachael Cooper (a cool and talented American actress in year 10) and Akbar Khan (techno wizard), fourteen-year-old Max Taylor finds a way to create one in his dad’s garden shed. Their first programme is a disaster, but the reaction from the audience is beyond the team’s wildest dreams. And when a girl at school goes missing, Newskids on the Net becomes the nerve centre of a desperate nationwide search. Soon, the kids themselves are front-page news and are propelled into a deadly adventure where kidnaps, secret recordings lead to a nerve-jangling climax at the World Cup semifinals at Wembley Stadium.

Tennessee Williams and Company: His Essential Screen Actors takes a critical look at these eleven actors and their roles, bonded by their sustained artistic and professional association with Williams, specifically the success, and sometimes failure, of their interpretations of his characters for the screen. The results include some of the more remarkable performances in movie history, from Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh in A Streetcar Named Desire to Anna Magnani in The Rose Tattoo and Geraldine Page in Sweet Bird of Youth. DiLeo takes you through the entire careers of these eleven indelible stars, while giving his main attention to their Williams performances. From the underrated (Joanne Woodward in The Fugitive Kind, Madeleine Sherwood in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof) to the overrated (Elizabeth Taylor in Suddenly, Last Summer, Paul Newman in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof), Tennessee Williams and Company takes an entertaining and intensely detailed ride alongside some of the most inexhaustibly fascinating actors and actresses of our screen heritage, each of them challenged by the unforgettable characters of the one and only Tennessee Williams.
