"An important collection of essays that goes beyond the 'immigrant women only' approach to present new perspectives and raise new questions about gender and contemporary U.S. immigration."—Nancy Foner, author of From Ellis Island to JFK: New York's Two Great Waves of Immigration "At last a book that puts gender front and center in debates about the U.S. immigration experience and provides those new to these discussions with an invaluable introduction to the field. Particularly impressive is the substantive breadth of the contributions in this volume, which range from scholarship on the work, family, and political lives of immigrants from all parts of the globe to studies of ethnic, racial, and generational identity. A much needed and essential addition to the bookshelf of any immigration scholar. "—Peggy Levitt, author of The Transnational Villagers "This collection of wonderfully innovative and insightful essays by a distinguished group of social scientists demonstrates the definitive and mutually constitutive connections linking immigration and gender in the contemporary United States. The processes and practices of immigration play a central role in shaping a distinctly gendered distribution of opportunity and suffering, while gendered social structures, preferences, practices, and personal networks play a definitive role in shaping the contours of the immigrant experience and its impact on social, cultural, and economic life."—George Lipsitz, author of American Studies in a Moment of Danger "Hondagneu-Sotelo has assembled some of the foremost scholars in international migration to address the critical yet long-neglected issue of gender. The essays cover topics from employment to motherhood, relate home and host in transnational experiences, and incorporate differences in race, ethnicity, generation, and age in their analyses. A truly remarkable volume."—Lucie Cheng, co-author of Linking Our Lives: Chinese American Women of Los Angeles "Edited by a leading pioneer of immigration studies, this volume offers some of the latest and most brilliant thinking about what migrant men and women bring to the United States, leave behind and create anew. This is a must read for those interested in immigration, gender, and the many meanings of life."—Arlie Russell Hochschild, co-editor with Barbara Ehrenreich of Global Woman: Nannies, Maids, and Sex Workers in the New Economy

In 1949, Dale Ford joined the peacetime Air Force. Two days after he graduated from flying school, the Korean War started. What a jolt that was! Rather foolishly, he had not really considered that he might be called upon to fly combat someday. President Truman's order for our armed forces to support South Korea in their fight with North Korea quickly changed that. After about ten months of additional training, Ford found himself in the middle of that fight. He flew one hundred combat missions against the Russian Mig-15 in the swept-wing F-86 jet fighters of the 4th and 51st Fighter Interceptor Wings. He was not a hero or a jet ace. He was just a buck second lieutenant doing his job. Ford spent three years as a jet fighter pilot and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Ford went on to receive a bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering from Purdue University. In 1956, he joined Convair Aeronautical Corporation, builder of the world's first supersonic bomber. He spent the next five years working closely with and flying with the B-58 test pilots as a flight test engineer. They blazed new ground taking this four-engine, 160,000-pound aircraft to twice the speed of sound in the 1950s and proved it was ready for production for the U.S. Air Force. Join author Dale Ford as he relives and relates one man's experiences through Two Hot Wars and One Cold War.

The relationship between migration, development and remittances in Lesotho has been exhaustively studied for the period up to 1990. This was an era when the vast majority of migrants from Lesotho were young men working on the South African gold mines and over 50 percent of households had a migrant mineworker. Since 1990, patterns of migration to South Africa have changed dramatically. The reconfiguration of migration between the two countries has had a marked impact on remittance flows to Lesotho. The central question addressed in this report is how the change in patterns of migration from and within Lesotho since 1990 has impacted on remittance flows and usage.

One of America's most beloved authors and a master of the personal essay, Willie Morris (1934-1999) wrote nineteen books and hundreds of articles and reflections. To honor his memory on the seventy-fifth anniversary of his birth (November 29, 1934), My Two Oxfords is a special edition of one of these choice essays. In this piece, he addresses the quirky circumstance of having lived in two of the world's most disparate places. There were two Oxfords in his life-Oxford University in England where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar in the 1950s and Oxford, Mississippi, the home of University of Mississippi, where he was writer in residence when he wrote the essay.Among the obvious contrasts between the two places, Morris finds complexity: The legendary beauty of the Ole Miss coed is not myth. The girls of Oxford, England, so stringently screened by some of the world's most demanding academic requirements, were often dour; yet the occasional warm-spirited beauty among them was always worth the waiting . . . By the same token, the intellectual Ole Miss sorority girl of good and gentle disposition is a joyous song in the heart and will endure. This essay is quintessential Morris-lyrical and evocative, a blend of personal experience and memory, history, a strong sense of place, and a bit of whimsy. A foreword by JoAnne Prichard Morris and a photograph by David Rae Morris make this edition a must-have for Willie Morris's many fans.

As an unemployed, poverty-stricken South African in London, Nicole began to pen her thoughts on her two-year experience into her diary. These rambles were to become a weekly column in the South African, the expat newspaper in London, after a chance meeting with the editor, Greg. Greg's job exposed him to lots of useful information such as how to get a fake visa and where to buy blackmarket boerewors. It seemed a shame to confine these insights to history's slosh bucket, so once back home, the two met up again. It was common sense to combine their experiences, put them all on paper and merge their knowledge into Take the Gap - a use-it or lose-it book packed full of advice for those adventurous souls who are considering a stint in London. Or, for those who have been and seen and want to reminisce, a first-class ticket back to the Big Smoke that you grew to love (like a pounding headache after a night down at the pub). This book is not a guide; guides are boring and go out of date. Anxious parents should not read this book!
