This book provides a scientifically-accurate explanation of the lymphatic system, the theory behind lymph drainage massage, and explains when it should be performed. Also provided is an explanation of the application of lymph drainage massage to the needs of well clients, rather than focusing on pathology, since most massage therapists and estheticians will not be treating lymph edema disease in their work. Just as the magnitude of the growth and developmental problems attributable to human helminthiasis are being fully realized, we are able for the first time to describe defined immune responses giving rise to the pathological lesions seen. On the basis of the different sets of cytokines produced by CD4+ T cells, these responses can be classified according to the Th1/Th2/Th0 paradigm. Deleterious inflammatory responses to metazoan parasites appear to be consistently associated with a highly polarized Th2 cytokine profile. Thus, host-parasite models involving specific enteric and tissue helminths have provided seminal data on immunoregulatory and immunopathogenetic responses that are more broadly generalizable to the entire Th1/Th2 paradigm. The first three articles in this volume present an overview of recent advances in the understanding of the induction of IgE, eosinophilic, and cytokine regulatory responses to helminthic infection. Subsequent articles comprehensively review immunopathogenetic aspects of schistosomiasis, hookworm infection, echinococcosis, lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis, toxocariasis, and cysticercosis, and, at the same time, emphasize key directions and priorities. Conclusions from animal models of infection are set in the context of human disease wherever possible. For all immunologists with an interest in cytokine biology and for those interested in the biology of tropical infectious diseases this volume is essential reading.

Computerization of the radiological image (digitization, com puted tomography), the diagnostic contributions of ultra sonography, and the advent of magnetic resonance imaging all herald a new era in radiology. While this discipline retains its clinical nature, and continues to group together various specialities, the technical "common denominator" plays an increasingly important role, and requires a more global ap proach to the clinical problem. Centralization of state-of-the-art equipment in technical imaging centers - strategic points in future hospitals - will al low clinical radiologists to perform all of the examinations re quired for diagnosis and follow-up with a high degree of reli ability, under optimum security, and at the lowest possible cost. This is the right moment to publish this treatise, as we begin to apply this new approach to radiological studies. For purposes of clarity, the lymphomatous processes have been dealt with by anatomical location; more important, though, is the discussion of the multiple aspects of diagnosis, with particular emphasis on recent noninvasive modalities (characteristic visceral lesions ; analysis and characterization of the anatomical and tissue components of these lesions with the highest possible degree of precision; regional disease ex tension and anatomical features; information on concomitant regional involvement and distant sites), allowing selection of appropriate therapy and surveillance strategies.

Lymphatic research has experienced a near explosion of activity in recent years, as awareness of the importance of lymphatic mechanisms to the continuum of human biology and disease has grown. This "lymphatic continuum" now easily encompasses cardiovascular disease, respiratory inflammation, obesity, autoimmune disease, and chronic transplant rejection, among many other pathologic conditionas. An exponential growth in technological tools for research has made possible a similar growth in our comprehension of the molecular regulatory processes that govern the normal development and function of the lymphatic system. The purpose of this volume is to review and document the wonderful growth of insight into the tools for lymphatic investigation, biological principles of the lymphatic system, and biological principles in lymphedema diagnosis and management, as well as the lymphatic biology of cancer and metastasis.
