As an educator with many years of experience in directing English as a Second Language (ESL) and cross-cultural programs, Kathleen Gripman spotted a troubling gap in the educational preparation of many students. Learning the essentials of American history is a critical educational milestone, but most overviews of America’s story are designed for reading levels beyond the ability of most English Language Learners. Gripman decided to fill that gap with the richly illustrated and fun-to-read book American History Made Easy. The book begins with the meeting of European and native cultures in what is now the U.S. after the voyage of Christopher Columbus in 1492. The story continues through the American Revolution, the expansion of the nation in the 1800s, the Civil War and key events in America’s most recent century of challenges and triumphs. To make students’ studying easier, the book also includes lots of supplemental materials, among them: study questions, the text of the U.S. Constitution, a list of American authors and recommended reading, a glossary and an index. Gripman had the perfect qualifications to meet this challenge as a successful business owner supervising ESL educators in southeast Michigan—and as a developer of some of the literacy-training materials used in her programs. Gripman also had lived overseas, including five years of service in Europe with the U.S. Navy. She designed her overview of American history for the millions of English Language Learners (ELL), including English as a Second Language students, who are studying each year across the United States. The book can be used either in a classroom or for self-study. Between these covers, Gripman narrates the essential chapters of American history, written at an intermediate reading level and accompanied by original black-and-white sketches and charts to deepen reader recall. In selecting the chapters to include, she drew on the questions frequently asked on exams and certification tests that immigrants commonly encounter, making the book a practical way to prepare for testing. Most importantly, Gripman decided not to distill America’s story into a series of dry facts to be memorized. Writing in an engaging narrative style, her book also is ideal for any reader who wants an overview of the essentials of American history.

No greater challenge faces our society than improving the educational opportunities for millions of young people trapped in chronically low-performing schools. Overcoming this challenge requires talented and dedicated school leaders whose knowledge and skills extend far beyond what is covered in conventional principal preparation programs. This book draws on extensive research by the author and others on the actions needed to turn around low-performing schools. First, however, the book examines the personal qualities needed to undertake the turnaround process. Following chapters provide guidelines on diagnosing the school-based causes of low achievement and developing a school turnaround plan. The author focuses on the importance of continuous planning – a departure from standard practice. A major portion of the book is devoted to examples of first-order and second-order strategies for raising achievement. Specific recommendations for launching the turnaround process and sustaining gains beyond the first years of turnaround are provided. The concluding chapter addresses the role of school districts in supporting school-based turnaround efforts.

Step Forward Canada Book 2 uses real-life situations and everyday events to teach mature or adult ESL learners the building blocks of the English language. It is a four-skill book whose comprehensive, easy-to-navigate Table of Contents gives instructors a clear picture of the lessons and identifies where important language requirements will be taught throughout the text. The Table of Contents lays out the book's 12 units and identifies how the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLBs) coincide with and enhance the material being taught in the classroom. The CLBs are the cornerstone for identifying the language levels of adult English learners in Canada. More specifically, they allow instructors a simple, streamlined means of evaluating the English proficiency of their students based on regulated benchmarks (that act as reference points). The CLB levels covered in Step Forward Canada Book 2 range from two to five; however, there are twelve CLB levels, with higher levels being taught in more advanced texts. The body of the text includes 12 units. Each unit has five lessons and a review section. The five lessons are: vocabulary, life stories, grammar, everyday conversation, and real-life reading. Each of the five lessons covers various CLBs using everyday situations. For example, Unit four is titled "Looking for Work" and covers basic guidelines for ESL learners when job-searching, such as reading and understanding a job application, talking about educationand work experience, and answering typical job interview questions. The lessons cover all four skills as they enable students to talk about required job skills (speaking), read and respond to a job ad (reading and writing), and ask and respond to interview questions (listening). Each of these valuable lessons are identified as different CLB levels throughout the footers of the book - footers which coincide with the Table of Contents - for instructors' convenience.
