Developing methods to automatically extract objects from high spatial resolution (HSR) remotely sensed imagery on a large scale is crucial for supporting land user and land cover (LULC) mapping with HSR imagery. However, this task is notoriously challenging. Deep learning, a recent breakthrough in machine learning, has shed light on this problem. The goal of this thesis is to develop a deep insight into the use of deep learning to develop reliable automated object extraction methods for applications with HSR imagery. The thesis starts by re-examining the knowledge the remote sensing community has achieved on the problem, but in the context of deep learning. Attention is given to object-based image analysis (OBIA) methods, which are currently considered to be the prevailing framework for this problem and have had a far-reaching impact on the history of remote sensing. In contrast to common beliefs, experiments show that object-based methods suffer seriously from ill-defined image segmentation. They are less effective at leveraging the power of the features learned by deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) than conventionally patch-based methods. This thesis then studies ways to further improve the accuracy of object extraction with deep CNNs. Given that vector maps are required as the final format in many applications, the focus is on addressing the issues of generating high-quality vector maps with deep CNNs. A method combining bottom-up deep CNN prediction with top-down object modeling is proposed for building extraction. This method also exhibits the potential to extend to other objects of interest. Experiments show that implementing the proposed method on a single GPU results in the capability of processing 756 km2 of 12 cm aerial images in about 30 hours. By post-editing on top of the resulting automated extraction, high-quality building vector maps can be produced about 4-times faster than conventional manual digitization methods.

Matching Properties of Deep Sub-Micron MOS Transistors examines this interesting phenomenon. Microscopic fluctuations cause stochastic parameter fluctuations that affect the accuracy of the MOSFET. For analog circuits this determines the trade-off between speed, power, accuracy and yield. Furthermore, due to the down-scaling of device dimensions, transistor mismatch has an increasing impact on digital circuits. The matching properties of MOSFETs are studied at several levels of abstraction: A simple and physics-based model is presented that accurately describes the mismatch in the drain current. The model is illustrated by dimensioning the unit current cell of a current-steering D/A converter. The most commonly used methods to extract the matching properties of a technology are bench-marked with respect to model accuracy, measurement accuracy and speed, and physical contents of the extracted parameters. The physical origins of microscopic fluctuations and how they affect MOSFET operation are investigated. This leads to a refinement of the generally applied 1/area law. In addition, the analysis of simple transistor models highlights the physical mechanisms that dominate the fluctuations in the drain current and transconductance. The impact of process parameters on the matching properties is discussed. The impact of gate line-edge roughness is investigated, which is considered to be one of the roadblocks to the further down-scaling of the MOS transistor. Matching Properties of Deep Sub-Micron MOS Transistors is aimed at device physicists, characterization engineers, technology designers, circuit designers, or anybody else interested in the stochastic properties of the MOSFET.

Extraction of intelligence from text data is increasingly becoming automated as software and network technology increases in speed and scope. However, enormous amounts of text data are often available and one must carefully design a data mining strategy to obtain the relevant nuggets of gold from the mountains of useless dross. Two strategies can be tried. A deep approach is to use a few strong clues to find reasonable sentence candidates, then apply linguistic restrictions to find and extract key information (if any) surrounding the candidates. A broad approach is to focus on large numbers of weaker clues such as specific words whose implications can be combined to rate sentences and present those of high likelihood of relevance. In the work reported here, we tested the deep approach on military intelligence reports about enemy positions, which were relatively short text extracts, and we tested the broad approach on news stories from the World Wide Web involving terrorism, which presented a large volume of text information.

Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union almost a decade ago, there has been rapid evolution of interactions between the Western nations and individual countries of the former Soviet Union. As part of that interaction, the autonomous independent Republic of Azerbaijan through its scientific arm, the Geological Institute of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences under the Directorship of Academician Akif Ali-Zadeh and Deputy Director Ibrahim Guliev, arranged for personnel to be seconded to the University of South Carolina. The idea here was to see to what extent a quantitative understanding could be achieved of the evolution of the Azerbaijan part of the South Caspian Basin from dynamical, thermal and hydrocarbon perspectives. The Azeris brought with them copious amounts of data collected over decades which, together with the quantitative numerical codes available at USC, enabled a concerted effort to be put forward, culminating in two large books (Evolution of the South Caspian Basin: Geological Risks and Probable Hazards, 675 pps; and The South Caspian Basin: Stratigraphy, Geochemistry, and Risk Analysis, of which were published by the Azerbaijan Academy of 472 pps. ) both Sciences, and also many scientific papers. Thus, over the last four to five years an integrated comprehensive start has been made to understand the hydrocarbon proneness of the South Caspian Basin. In the course of the endeavor to understand the basinal evolution, it became clear that a variety of natural hazards occur in the Basin.

Ecotourism and natural resource extraction may be seen as contradictory pursuits, yet in reality they often take place side by side, sometimes even supported by the same institutions.
