Why is America living in an age of profound economic inequality? Why, despite the desperate need to address climate change, have even modest environmental efforts been defeated again and again? Why have protections for employees been decimated? Why do hedge-fund billionaires pay a far lower tax rate than middle-class workers? The conventional answer is that a popular uprising against “big government” led to the ascendancy of a broad-based conservative movement. But as Jane Mayer shows in this powerful, meticulously reported history, a network of exceedingly wealthy people with extreme libertarian views bankrolled a systematic, step-by-step plan to fundamentally alter the American political system. The network has brought together some of the richest people on the planet. Their core beliefs—that taxes are a form of tyranny; that government oversight of business is an assault on freedom—are sincerely held. But these beliefs also advance their personal and corporate interests: Many of their companies have run afoul of federal pollution, worker safety, securities, and tax laws. The chief figures in the network are Charles and David Koch, whose father made his fortune in part by building oil refineries in Stalin’s Russia and Hitler’s Germany. The patriarch later was a founding member of the John Birch Society, whose politics were so radical it believed Dwight Eisenhower was a communist. The brothers were schooled in a political philosophy that asserted the only role of government is to provide security and to enforce property rights. When libertarian ideas proved decidedly unpopular with voters, the Koch brothers and their allies chose another path. If they pooled their vast resources, they could fund an interlocking array of organizations that could work in tandem to influence and ultimately control academic institutions, think tanks, the courts, statehouses, Congress, and, they hoped, the presidency. Richard Mellon Scaife, the mercurial heir to banking and oil fortunes, had the brilliant insight that most of their political activities could be written off as tax-deductible “philanthropy.” These organizations were given innocuous names such as Americans for Prosperity. Funding sources were hidden whenever possible. This process reached its apotheosis with the allegedly populist Tea Party movement, abetted mightily by the Citizens United decision—a case conceived of by legal advocates funded by the network. The political operatives the network employs are disciplined, smart, and at times ruthless. Mayer documents instances in which people affiliated with these groups hired private detectives to impugn whistle-blowers, journalists, and even government investigators. And their efforts have been remarkably successful. Libertarian views on taxes and regulation, once far outside the mainstream and still rejected by most Americans, are ascendant in the majority of state governments, the Supreme Court, and Congress. Meaningful environmental, labor, finance, and tax reforms have been stymied. Jane Mayer spent five years conducting hundreds of interviews-including with several sources within the network-and scoured public records, private papers, and court proceedings in reporting this book. In a taut and utterly convincing narrative, she traces the byzantine trail of the billions of dollars spent by the network and provides vivid portraits of the colorful figures behind the new American oligarchy. Dark Money is a book that must be read by anyone who cares about the future of American democracy.

In view of the 2016 US election season, the second edition of this book analyzes the way political campaigns have been traditionally run and the extraordinary changes that have occurred since 2012. Dennis W. Johnson looks at the most sophisticated techniques of modern campaigning—micro-targeting, online fundraising, digital communication, the new media—and examines what has changed, how those changes have dramatically transformed campaigning, and what has remained fundamentally the same despite new technologies and communications. Campaigns are becoming more open and free-wheeling, with greater involvement of activists (especially through social media) and average voters alike. At the same time, they have become more professionalized, and the author has experience managing and marketing the process. Campaigning in the Twenty-First Century illustrates the daunting challenges for candidates and professional consultants as they try to get their messages out to voters. Ironically, the more open and robust campaigns become, the greater is the need for seasoned, flexible, and imaginative professional consultants. New to the Second Edition Includes coverage of the 2012 and 2014 elections, looking ahead to 2016. Updates coverage of campaign finance since the landmark Citizens United Supreme Court decision. Adds to the discussion of demographic and technological changes in elections since 2012.

More than two billion dollars. That’s how much money was spent in the 2012 presidential campaign—the most expensive campaign in history. Each party raised and spent more than one billion dollars as the traditional boundaries of campaign financing were ignored. Both parties could do so because they were playing in a game with new rules—rules that largely developed after the 2010 Supreme Court ruling known as Citizens United. That case removed many restrictions on donation limits, particularly for corporations and unions. The result was the development of a new set of political players called “Super PACs” that were allowed to enter the political arena and spend an unlimited amount of money on behalf of clients. This book looks at how Super PACs raised and spent money and influenced the 2012 election. It provides an insightful look at how both right- and left-leaning groups approached the election and impacted the political process.

Dark Money: A Complete Summary Dark Money by Jane Mayer is a book about the wealthy donors who founded and support organizations dedicated to promoting libertarian ideals. Jane Mayer is an investigative journalist and a staff writer for The New Yorker, who writes exclusively about the contributions of the wealthy to US politics. David and Charles Koch, of the famous four Koch brothers, are two of the most important founders. They were raised in a way that promotes free-market capitalism, and because of that they did not like anything that even resembled or was associated with communism. After the Koch brothers inherited their father's oil business, Charles and David wanted to buy out their other two brothers. One of the Koch brothers' main ideals is the opposition of any kind of government health and safety regulations. They fought against regulators who alleged that their business endangered employees' lives, exposing them to hazardous materials, such as mercury and benzene. This resulted in a million-dollar settlement. In addition to the Koch brothers, two other important characters in the book are Hillary Clinton, former US senator and candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016, and Barack Obama, 44th president of the United States, and the first black president. Dark Money is full of political intrigue, interesting facts, and answers to the questions people may have about the money that funds politics.

Dark Money Read Dark Money - The Billionaire Agenda and its Stranglehold on the United States Government on your PC, Mac, smart phone, table, ipad or Kindle device. As America faces four years of an entirely new way of being, having elected a reality show star to become president of America, we must ask ourselves, how did we get here? How did American politics degrade so much as to allow for a man who has no business being in the Whitehouse to take power? There are many theories. Some people want to point to racism, others want to point at the uneducated voter. The reality is that there are many different factors that have led to the rise of the alt-right and the rise of a brand new, potentially damaging type of republican. One of those factors has been the influx of cash, influence from those in the darkness, millionaires and billionaires who put their money into the vested interest of seizing control over America. In other words, money has bought and controlled the republican party for quite some time. Indeed, the money that has slowly weaved its way into the heart of American right wing politics has taken such a hold that many people don't even realize the secret history of the two men who are most responsible for this shift in American politics: the Koch Brothers. Perhaps you have heard the name in passing, maybe you've heard some politicians or protestors talk about it, or maybe you're not familiar with them at all. The two brothers, Charles and David Koch are responsible for the transformation of conservative politics into a powerful machine meant to grant those with money absolute control. Today, we're going to be looking at the two brothers in detail and see just how the Koch's massive amounts of money have led to the creation of the alt-right, the rise of Trump and how they have forever changed the way that Americans conduct politics. If you're curious about these two and just how much of an affect they have had on conservative politics, then pull up a chair and get comfortable. There is a lot to go over. In this book we're going to cover: The Koch brothers The Right Wing Billionaire Agendas Super Pacs Democratic Party And much, much more! So are you ready to get started? Download your copy today!

As Pennyman hones his writing and reporting skills, Kerr rises in power and, in an eventual run for governor of the state hires Pennyman as his chief-of-staff. As time passes, however, the two quarrel over the role of so-called independent Super PACs in campaign fund raising. Eventually Pennyman finds himself a reporter again and Kerr running for President. With the FEC stalled in party politics, investigative reporting reveals that Kerr's Super PAC may be flirting with money invested by suspicious sources. And matters suddenly become life and death more than win or lose.
