This book presents recent advances related to the following two topics: - how mechanical fields close to material or geometrical singularities such as cracks can be determined; - how failure criteria can be established according to the singularity degrees related to these discontinuities. Concerning the determination of mechanical fields close to a crack tip, the first part of the book presents most of the traditional methods in order to classify them into two major categories. The first is based on the stress field, such as the Airy function, and the second resolves the problem from functions related to displacement fields. Following this, a new method based on the Hamiltonian system is presented in great detail. Local and energetic approaches to fracture are used in order to determine the fracture parameters such as stress intensity factor and energy release rate. The second part of the book describes methodologies to establish the critical fracture loads and the crack growth criteria. Singular fields for homogeneous and non-homogeneous problems near crack tips, v-notches, interfaces, etc. associated with the crack initiation and propagation laws in elastic and elastic-plastic media, allow us to determine the basis of failure criteria. Each phenomenon studied is dealt with according to its conceptual and theoretical modeling, to its use in the criteria of fracture resistance; and finally to its implementation in terms of feasibility and numerical application. Contents 1. Introduction. Part 1: Stress Field Analysis Close to the Crack Tip 2. Review of Continuum Mechanics and the Behavior Laws. 3. Overview of Fracture Mechanics. 4. Fracture Mechanics. 5. Introduction to the Finite Element Analysis of Cracked Structures. Part 2: Crack Growth Criteria 6. Crack Propagation. 7. Crack Growth Prediction in Elements of Steel Structures Submitted to Fatigue. 8. Potential Use of Crack Propagation Laws in Fatigue Life Design.

This volume (Parts A and B) contains the edited papers presented at the annual Review of Progress in Quan?itative Nondestructive Evalua tion held at the University of California (San Diego) in LaJo11a, August 3-8, 1986. The Review was organized and sponsored by the Center for NDE at Iowa State University and the Ames Laboratory, in cooperation with the Office of Basic Energy Sciences, USDOE, and the Materia1s Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Approximately 400 attendees, a new record, representing various government agencies, industry, and universities participated in the technical presentations, poster sessions, and discussions. This Review, with its wide-ranging interchange of technical information, stands as one of the most compre hensive in the field of NDE research and engineering. In order to present the reader with a more usefu1 document, we have organized the symposium papers in these Proceedings by subject rather than by the order of presentation at the Review. Topical subject headings have been selected under which the 1arge majority of papers wou1d reasonably falI. Here, again, we have revised the format used in former years to accommodate an evolving focus of interest in the field. These categories cover a broad spectrum of research in NDE and encompass activities from fundamental work to early engineering applications. In the following paragraphs we offer a brief summary of the research presented in these Proceedings.

In terms of simple and complex systems, it is a whole new world out there. At the initial publication of this book, fourteen years ago, the web was in its infancy, DVDs did not exist, cell phones were few and far between, and the information superhighway was just a blip upon the horizon. If you used the terms "social engineering," you were most likely a political scientist, and if you were "phishing" you might be listening to a rock band. The second edition of a bestseller, Human Factors in Simple and Complex Systems provides the necessary understanding of the breadth and depth of human factors issues that influence the design, implementation, and evaluation of products and systems. Emphasizing the close relationship between basic theory and application, the authors delineate a framework for the research process, present an integrated view of the current state of knowledge, and examine how these factors can be applied to system design. The new edition addresses such concepts as situation awareness and highlights topics of interest, with a special focus on computer applications and human-computer interaction. See what’s new in the Second Edition New topics, such as situational awareness, that capture the tremendous changes in human factors and ergonomics Tightly integrates basic research and application, strengthening the link between knowledge and practice Each chapter includes a separate box that discusses a topic of current interest related to human interaction with computers and recent technology Demonstrating a general approach to solving a broad range of system problems, the book provides coverage of the theoretical foundation on which the discipline of human factors is built. Structured around human information processing, it covers the full range of contemporary human factors and ergonomics, then shows you how to apply them.
