Deserted by his mother and abandoned by his father at just three months old, Jerry Coyne was sent to live in a Catholic children's home run by nuns of the order of the Sisters of Nazareth. Life soon settled into a rhythm and then, one day, the beatings started. Harsh, vicious punishments became part of everyday life for the bemused little boy as the nuns attempted to beat the Devil out of him. Jerry began to hide behind bad behaviour and at the age of 12, his defiance resulted in him being sent to a boarding for boys with behavioural problems. Life then got worse when his housemaster, the man whose job it was to take care of him, began a regime of mental, physical and sexual abuse. Years of self-hatred and guilt led to Jerry suffering from a severe stammer and, eventually, he tried to hang himself. This was the turning point and, after finally finding the courage to go to the authorities, Jerry and numerous other victims came forward and were instrumental in the conviction and imprisonment of their abuser. Devil's Child is the devastating true story of a childhood destroyed by abuse and of a young man's struggle to try to come to terms with the past and believe in the future.

A number of cases of serious child abuse have resulted from beliefs that children may be possessed by evil spirits and may then be given the power to bewitch others. Misfortune, failure, illness and even death may be blamed on them. The 'cure', nowadays called deliverance rather than exorcism, is to expel the spirits, sometimes by violent means. This book draws together contributions on aspects of possession and witchcraft from leading academics and expert practitioners in the field. It has been put together following conferences held by Inform, a charity that provides accurate information on new religions as a public service. There is no comparable information publicly available; this book is the first of its kind. Eileen Barker, founder of Inform, introduces the subject and Inform's Deputy Director goes on to detail the requests the charity has answered in recent years on the subject of children, possession and witchcraft. This book offers an invaluable resource for readers, whether academic or practitioner - particularly those in the fields of the safeguarding of children, and their education, health and general welfare.

Based on his studies of over 9,000 families, Murray A. Straus, the foremost researcher on family violence in the world, discusses the extent to which parents in the United States use corporal punishment (such as spanking and slapping) and its effects on their chil-dren. The question of whether corporal punishment is an effective method of discipline is hotly debated. Straus contends that this believed-to-be-"minor" form of physical violence is precursor to much violence that plagues our world. Children who are spanked quickly learn that love and violence can go hand in hand. Since spanking is generally done by loving, caring parents?for the child's own good?a child can learn that hitting is "morally right." Straus describes what he has learned through two decades of research: children who are spanked are from two to six times more likely to be physically aggressive, to become juvenile delinquents, and later, as adults, to use physical violence against their spouses, to have sadomasochistic tendencies, and to suffer from depression. Straus alerts parents to these risks, and argues that spanking adversely affects not only the children who are subjected to it but society as a whole. This groundbreaking book, now available in paperback with a substantive new introduction and new concluding chapter, is essential reading for parents as well as teachers, lawyers, and judges. Professionals in fields such as social work, child protection, delin-quency and criminology, psychology, and politics will find it of critical importance.

The plot revolves around three angry teenagers in a small, blue- collar town. Don Calhoun, the main character, is angry because he is a poor, pimply-faced teenage loner who yearns to be the most popular boy in school. Behind the pimply-faced exterior is a restless spirit seething with hate and revenge -- a deadly combination. It’s the 60s and drugs and the free-love movement have taken hold in California. Through an acquaintance who has just returned from San Francisco, Don gets his hands on devil worship literature and a small wooden statue that was used in Satanic worship ceremonies. Don reads some of the literature, and concludes that selling his soul is the only way he can possibly realize his dream. But he really doesn't think it's possible. Across town lives another angry, miserable teen. His name is Eddie, and all he wants is to become the greatest rock-'n'-roll guitar player in the world. Eddie and Don are members of the zit squad at high school; at least that's what the jocks and cheerleaders call them. Laura once was a cheerleader and hung out with the other cheerleaders and jocks. But that was before she was paralyzed in a diving accident and ended up a "wheelchair-bound freak." Now her obsession is to walk again and regain her rightful place among the beautiful people. And like Don and Eddie, she becomes bitter and vengeful. Don is the first to take the plunge into the supernatural by conjuring up a demon that arranges for him to sell his soul to the big man himself. In just a matter of days, Don's new-found strength and powers enable him to destroy some of his tormentors. Only one person in town can sense the presence of evil and the death and destruction that will follow. But long ago she was labeled a religious nut, and nobody takes "poor ol' Anna" seriously. Don discovers that the ancient man who owns all the mills in town already is in league with the devil, having sold his soul a century earlier. Don is encouraged to recruit three more devil worshipers so the coven will be a complete thirteen members. Cruel events soon have Eddie and Laura eager to take the plunge after Don, and he easily convinces them that their souls are small prices to pay for the good life. To make their deal, Don, Eddie and Laura must sacrifice a human to Satan. Don chooses one of his teachers who delights in humiliating him in class, Eddie chooses a fellow student who ridiculed his music, and Laura chooses the girl who once was her best friend, but became her worst enemy after the accident. Each sacrifice is carried out in a bizarre, sadistic manner. The bodies soon begin to accumulate. Police launch an investigation but have few leads and very little incriminating evidence. Phillip Sawyer, a newspaper reporter fresh out of college, begins his own investigation hoping to find fame and fortune after breaking the case. And Anna keeps having visions of the murders and senses the growing evil. She tries to warn people and get someone to help her, but of course nobody believes her foolish story. In the end, Anna realizes she must battle Satan by herself, and sets out to prove she is the chosen one. Her tattered Bible guides her. In one test she handles a rattlesnake and drinks poison. She then raises a dog from the dead. But the ultimate test comes when she has to discard all her worldly possessions. The young reporter trails Don, Eddie and Laura to the old barn where they have set up an altar to worship Satan. Sawyer is caught spying on them and is asked what his last wish is before they cut his throat and feed him to the rats. To buy time, Sawyer tells them he wants to interview the devil. He is tied up and tossed into the cellar of the old barn. A few days later, Don arranges the interview at the mansion of the mill owner. During the interview, Sawyer makes a fatal error, he mentions Jesus Christ which infuriates Satan. Sawyer is retied and dumped back into the cellar. But this time

A Proverb a Day Keeps the Devil Away applies the principles of God found in the Book of Proverbs to daily living. Illustrations are used to trigger the memories of its readers to past and present experiences in life; hopefully, causing the lesson of each devotion to profoundly impact the reader. These illustrations stem from relationships, home, work, play, decisions, reactions, thoughts, injustice and justice. Some are humorous and some very serious. Each one demonstrates the theme of that verse. The Book of Proverbs is as timely as time itself. Times have changed but people have not. They still face the hard issues of life: the same fears and hurts, the same temptations and sin, the same struggle with what is right and wrong, and the same questions about what role God really plays in their life. This devotional study aids its readers in getting a grip on these challenges. Philip Ayers was born in Roanoke, Virginia, on March 2nd, 1948. He is the second born of a family of five. Very early in his life, his family moved to Salem, Virginia, where he resided until he joined the United States Marine Corps at the age of seventeen. He served in the Viet Nam conflict. Spotting The Devil/Spotting The Devil From Far and Near. Avoiding The Trap Of Negative Behavior In Order To Fulfill The Purpose Of One’s Life. The word “devil” in this book is not used in the traditional sense. The word devil conjures up a powerful image of everything that is negative and destructive and it is in this sense that the word is used. We are surrounded by it. In many ways we are consumed by it, yet man is afraid to utter the word, as if by saying the word devil man is somehow admitting that he is accepting of this taboo and is in aggreance with the “devil” force. This book says that we must and can learn to identify all these negatives as they come at us in order to avoid the dire consequences that come about as a result of our contact with these ”devils” in our society. This book seeks to examine the world in which we live with an analytical approach to why we as the human race make the choices in life that we do. It starts with a simple story about an incident that happens in the author’s childhood, with the intention of explaining why the author sees things the way he does and coming to the realization that this was a defining moment in his life, even though he did not know it at the time. This book looks at fear, the fear that is an obstacle to most of us and this fear is something we take for granted, Most of us think that this fear is normal and that there is no way around it. Not true, as the author explains. He goes into the reasons why we must conquer these fears and where most of these fears originate. The author goes on to explain friendship and how we are so easily lulled into different behavior, how easy it is for us to get caught up in the moment and how easily it is to get carried away, usually to our detriment. In using stories from his life experience he takes the reader on a journey and in every step of that journey he unfolds a secret. There is so much that we take for granted and yet so much of this behavior can be prevented if we could only recognize what is coming at us, just like the driver who knows he is about to collide with another car because he sees it coming towards him from the opposite direction. The author looks at popular culture from the inside out and shows us how we are surrounded by so much negativity yet we don’t know it because we do not look at society from this angle. We can have a greater appreciation for the images that are fed to us if we see them for what they are, and we can watch and enjoy without becoming consumed by fantasy if we understand the motives behind what is being fed to us. In these times, it is crucial that we learn from the mistakes of the past and we challenge ourselves to be more disciplined and to develop our sense of foresight because we all have the gift. We are born with it, but as we grow we allow society’s ills to get the better of us and we just follow rather than lead ourselves into a better life, where we can find the fulfillment that we all seek. This book looks at first, the microcosm, and then the macrocosm, taking a peek at wars and what is the lesson of these wars. The author also looks at religion and man’s attitude towards it. Why do we get caught up in imagery and names and not listen to what is truth and what makes sense. We follow, even when two plus two does not make four, we follow blindly and again are led downstream. Finally the author looks at colors that have been in cultures for thousands of years and unravels the associations that many have come to attach to certain colors. This book is an eye opener, written in a simple language that would only serve to enlighten and unravel some of the mysteries that make life so complex. The key is right in front of us. We feel it, therefore we know it, and we are in denial more than we are not. Do we get dressed everyday for the creator, or do we get dressed for ourselves? It is true that man cannot serve two masters, but one can always find th

The long-awaited sequel to the legendary film It's a Wonderful Life, this story takes up where the movie left off, but veers quickly into dark, unfamiliar territory. Old George Bailey never did make it out of his little town of Bedford Falls; his one dying hope was that his children would take up the torch and explore the world as he'd always dreamed of doing … but, sadly, none shared his dream. This is a story about search and redemption. Spanning four decades and five continents, it is a tale of renewal, obsession, presage, ambition; of self-inflicted isolation and dwindling friendships in the 20th century: a century whose task is to rediscover its gods.
